My Esthetician At-Home Facial Protocol for a Stronger, Glowier Barrier
Featuring Image skincare

Every winter, I see the same thing happen in my treatment room. Skin that normally behaves suddenly feels: tight, flaky, dull, sensitive, or like makeup just doesn’t sit right anymore.
Most people assume they need stronger treatments or more exfoliation.
But winter skin isn’t a “do more” problem.
It’s a repair your barrier problem.
Cold air, indoor heat, and low humidity increase something we call transepidermal water loss — meaning your skin is quietly losing hydration all day long. When that happens, your barrier weakens and everything starts to look worse: texture, fine lines, redness, breakouts, dullness.
So instead of adding a bunch of new products, I always bring my clients back to the basics.
Because healthy skin really comes down to three things:
✔ cleanse gently
✔ treat + hydrate
✔ repair and protect the barrier
That’s it.
This is the exact at-home protocol I recommend to clients in the winter or anyone with sensitive, compromised skin— and it’s simple enough to stick to consistently.
The Winter Skin Reset Protocol
Think of this like a professional facial structure, simplified for home. No complicated routine. No 10 steps. Just what actually works.
Step 1 — Cleanse Without Stripping
If your skin feels tight after washing, your cleanser is too harsh.
That “squeaky clean” feeling people chase?
It’s actually barrier damage.
In winter, I avoid using foaming gel cleansers, on their own, because they strip lipids and make dehydration worse. I almost always move clients to a balm or cream cleanser this time of year.
What I want from a cleanser:
• removes makeup/SPF easily
• supports the barrier
• leaves skin soft, not tight
IMAGE BIOME+ Cleansing Comfort Balm
It melts everything off while keeping the skin calm and hydrated. It also supports the skin’s microbiome, which helps reduce sensitivity and inflammation — two huge winter concerns.

Massage onto dry skin for a full minute like you would in a facial. This boosts circulation and instantly makes skin look healthier.
Rinse with lukewarm water only (hot water is one of the fastest ways to dry out your skin).
Step 2 — Treat + Brighten (Hydration First)
BIOME+ dew bright serum

This step gives that immediate “plump” look while helping balance the skin’s natural ecosystem. It’s one of my favorite options for clients who feel dry, red, or sensitive because it hydrates without heaviness and helps restore glow naturally.
Dull winter skin usually isn’t just dry — it’s dehydrated and sluggish.
This is where treatment serums come in.
But instead of aggressive actives, I focus on hydration, calming, and strengthening the skin so it functions better on its own.
Apply to slightly damp skin and press it in.
Benefits:
• humectants
• barrier-supporting ingredients
• microbiome-friendly formula
Step 3 — Seal + Repair the Barrier
Moisturizer in winter isn’t optional — it’s protective.
This step locks in hydration and physically reinforces your barrier so water can’t escape as easily throughout the day.
If someone tells me their skin still feels dry, 9 times out of 10 they’re either skipping moisturizer or using one that’s too light.
In colder months, I prefer creams that feel comforting and cushiony.

IMAGE BIOME+ Cloud Crème
It’s rich but not greasy and gives that soft, bouncy finish that healthy skin has. It helps reduce tightness, smooth texture, and keeps hydration sealed in for hours.
Think of this step like wrapping your skin in a blanket.
Why I Love This 3-Step System for Winter
Honestly, most people don’t need a complicated routine.
They just need consistency and the right foundation.
That’s why I often recommend the BIOME+ trio set to clients.
It covers:
• cleanse
• treat
• repair

Everything your barrier needs — nothing extra.
It’s also a really nice way to try medical-grade skincare without committing to a full shelf of products. Simple, effective, and beginner-friendly.
Especially if your skin feels stressed or out of balance, this kind of “reset” routine can make a huge difference.
How I’d Use This at Home
Morning:
Cleanse → Serum → Cloud Crème → SPF
Night:
Cleanse → Serum → Cloud Crème
That’s it.
No overthinking. No 12 steps.
Healthy skin comes from doing the basics really well.

Common Winter Skin Mistakes I See All the Time
If your skin still feels dry, check for these:
• over-exfoliating
• skipping moisturizer
• hot showers
• not wearing SPF
• constantly switching products
Usually it’s not that your skin needs more.
It needs gentler and more consistent care.

Glowing skin in winter isn’t about chasing trends or buying everything new.
It’s about protecting your barrier and supporting your skin so it can function the way it’s meant to.
When your barrier is healthy, your skin naturally looks brighter, smoother, and more resilient.
